Code of Conduct
Objective, rules, and guidelines for our community
This group has been a great resource for many of us, and we are really happy how many of us have found our flock away from our homes. On this page, we'd like to lay out what we are here for, and what purposes this group serves the best.
Objective of the group
This group was made with a singular goal for new and old Indian immigrants to Canada of Muslim faith to connect with each other, and help each other become successful in Canada. All this while being the personal and emotional support to one another.
So, the core focus of this group is to help each other become established, strong, and successful in Canada.
With this objective and focus in mind, the group will specifically talk about some topics. A quick look at some examples of such topics is below.
Things we want to talk about
- How higher education works in Canada.
- Becoming a lawyer, healthcare worker, engineer, marketer, executive etc. in Canada.
- Excelling in your career in Canada and North America.
- Establishing and running an ethical and successful business in Canada.
- Investments and handling your finances right.
- How housing works in Canada.
- Getting around and traveling in Canada.
- How to go about government and other paperwork/processes.
- How to connect professionally and help each other move up the career ladder.
What this group is NOT
- This group is not a place for religious debates, education, and judgements. We are not here to discuss how to become a better Muslim. We believe it's an individual pursuit and that there are many other ways and avenues where people can learn about it.
- Although we value the effects of social and political activism, this group is not a place for it. We may have surface level discussions about news concerning us and our families, but we don't want to go deep into political topics.
- Promoting violence, extremism of any sort, or any activity that can motivate people to cause physical harm to other people or property.
Rules
Keeping that objective in mind, please be mindful of the following guidelines when it comes to posts:
-
1
Relevance: Be judicial about what you post. Does it help the above objective and conversation, does it advance it? If yes, great. If no, re-consider posting. Repeated violations of this rule will result in you getting banned from the group.
-
2
Jokes: Always welcome, but please never be racist, sexist, misogynistic, or caste-ist through jokes, and don't go overboard with them.
-
3
Forwards: ALWAYS include your own message with forwards, so that we know why you're sharing it here. Explain in your own words what the forward is about.
-
4
Religious Posts: Please keep it to a minimum. We have tonnes of other groups to discuss that, and here, all of us are adults with our own sources of religious knowledge — we're here for the stated objective.
-
5
Inclusion: This group does not discriminate or differentiate based on gender, race, caste, mazhab/fiqh etc. Shia, Sunni, Deobandi, Barelvi, Bohra, Ismaili, Ahmedi, North Indian, South Indian — you are all welcome here. Please don't make any comment about such differentiation.
- It's a lot easier to have your messages misconstrued over text. Let's be aware that some things can create misunderstandings unintentionally, and try to be mature about it.
- We all have seen what sectarian divide has done for us — let's not fall for it again.
-
6
Adverts: Feel free to post adverts of services you or your friends run, or ones you found online — but always post verified information and don't do blind forwards. Please do your bit in making sure none of us fall for a scam.
-
7
Trigger Warnings: If the content you're about to post contains violence, blood, gore, extreme graphics, strong language, or anything that can trigger anxiety or extreme emotions, please ALWAYS add a caption BEFORE the content — e.g. "Trigger Warning: Strong language" — so that anyone who wants to avoid it can do so.
-
8
Spam: Post anything that passes the above criteria, but just don't overdo it.
-
9
Xenophobia and Fundamentalism: Please don't post anything which is xenophobic, anti-semitic, racist, anti-white, talks about supremacy of any kind, or is categorised as fundamentalism.
-
10
Promotion of Violence: Do not post content which promotes violence, calls to arms, justifies violence in the name of religion, or promotes extremism of any sort. Repeated violations will attract a ban from the group.
-
11
Language: We have people from all over India, so let's please try to stick to English as much as possible so that most people can understand. Switching to native languages once in a while is fine and encouraged, but please provide a translation wherever possible so we all learn about each other's cultures too.
Repeated violations of these rules will result in you getting banned from the group.
These rules will be updated if required — just be respectful, caring, and friendly with each other.
